Sustainable Travel & the School Travel Policy
At Beaumont Primary School we encourage pupils and parents to travel to school by cycling, scooting and walking wherever possible. The school has two scooter pods where pupils can safely store their scooter during the school day; we also have a larger covered shelter for bikes.
To encourage awareness of active travel, we work with the Transport for London STARS accreditation system. The Sustainable Travel: Active, Responsible, Safe scheme for London schools and nurseries inspires young Londoners to travel to school sustainably, actively, responsibly and safely by championing walking, scooting and cycling. STARS supports pupils' wellbeing, helps to reduce congestion at the school gates and improve road safety and air quality. In September 2018 we were accredited with the Silver level award from STARS.
Through the STARS scheme, active travel is recorded weekly online by pupils in years 3 to 6. Two Junior Travel Ambassadors (JTAs) voted in by their classmates take responsibility for this along with promoting active travel generally across the class.
The JTAs are joined by staff members in a Working Group to organise and run events promoting active travel and through these initiatives the accreditation system is updated annually in the school's Travel Plan.
The school regularly promotes road safety awareness to pupils and this is endorsed in school newsletters where we ask all parents/carers to be safety aware and courteous to our neighbours, especially at peak traffic times, when driving their car in the school vicinity. Newsletters prompt drivers not to park on zig-zag or double-yellow lines and certainly not to impede our neighbours by parking over their drives.
The school is also a member of Transport for London's School Party Travel Scheme where educational visits and sports trips involving public transport benefit from free transport. Without such support, the pupils would not be able to gain the additional education gained by being able to access many valuable offsite resources.
